Quick step-by-step
Soak the seed
Soak the lentils for 8 hours before starting. Use whole, unhulled lentils: hulled ones won't sprout.
Set up the jar
Use a 1 L (34 oz) jar with mesh, no soil, away from direct light.
Rinse twice a day
Rinse twice a day, draining well each time.
Harvest as the root emerges
Cut in 3 to 4 days, once the root emerges and measures 1 to 2 cm (0.4–0.8 in).
Common mistakes
Using hulled lentils
Hulled lentils won't sprout. If you don't see sprouts, check that they're unhulled.
Harvesting late
Past 5 cm (2 in) they turn noticeably bitter.
