Quick step-by-step
Soak the seed
Hydrate the seed for 4 to 6 hours before sowing.
Prepare the tray
Use a 20×40 cm (8×16 in) tray with 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) of growing medium.
Sow it
Beet 'seed' is actually a fruit with several seeds inside: it's normal for multiple seedlings to sprout from one spot.
Give it good light
12 hours of good light (boosts the deep red color), at 18–24 °C (64–75 °F).
Water moderately
Keep the medium moist but not soaked, with moderate watering.
Harvest once the stem is deep red
Cut once the stems are deep red and the cotyledons are open.
Common mistakes
Expecting fast germination
Germination is slower and more uneven than other species; that's normal, not a problem.
Overwatering the medium
Don't overwater: excess water complicates germination that's already slower.
