Quick step-by-step
Prepare the tray
Use a 20×40 cm (8×16 in) tray with 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in) of growing medium.
Sow without soaking
No presoak needed, at medium density.
Mist lightly
Keep the medium moist but aerated with light misting.
Give it indirect light
12 hours of indirect light or a grow light, at 15–22 °C (59–72 °F).
Harvest before the true leaf
Cut once the cotyledons are fully open and deep green, before the true leaf appears.
Common mistakes
Excess moisture without airflow
Damping-off (seedlings dying at soil level) shows up with excess moisture and poor airflow.
Expecting even germination
Kale germinates more unevenly than radish; don't worry if it's not as uniform.
